DeNORML Hosts LEAP Speaker Ken Abraham

DeNORML would like to thank Ken Abraham of LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) for taking the time to speak at our February meeting. LEAP is an organization of 80,000 supporters, including police, prosecutors, judges, FBI/DEA agent, corrections officials, military personnel and civilians. The members and supporters of LEAP believe that ending prohibition and establishing a system of regulation and control is a more ethical and effective way to diminish drug addiction and street violence.

Mr. Abraham was a prosecutor, a defense attorney, and a former addict. He has had the unique experience of viewing the "War on Drugs" from many angles. From 1974 to 1979, he was a deputy attorney general for Delaware. After spending five years incarcerated for crimes stemming from a cocaine addiction, Ken has focused his efforts on advocating for prisoners civil rights and other prison related issues. Ken has founded a nonprofit called Citizens for Criminal JUSTICE, which runs an Adopt a Prisoner Church Reentry Program.

Mr. Abraham discussed LEAP and the Delaware Crime Prevention & Rehabilitation Act ("the Act") and the many benefits it would have on the community. He stated that currently only about 44% of all rapes, and about 47% of all murders are unsolved. The Act will implement a system in which drug and alcohol abusers will be treated and rehabilitated, resulting in reduced crime, and essentially allowing police officers more time to solve violent crimes.
